I have been greatly encouraged recently in conversations with several folks at Bethel. They have shared with me trials which are significant and ongoing. They have shared their struggle to battle against discouragement, and their thoughts, and their temptations. They have also shared with me how they continually have been clinging to Jesus Christ and to God’s Word in the midst of this ongoing trial…..especially to keep their thinking, and their emotions set upon what is true and what is profitable.
When they wonder how they will endure in the trial over the next week, and month, and perhaps longer, they have become weary. They have been an encouragement to me because in their weariness they choose to set their mind on Scripture- to allow the Word of God to do what God promises it will do, “restore their soul” and “rejoice their heart”, Psalm 19:7-8. And God faithfully continues to give them the strength for that day.
They have been for me a picture of the “great cloud of witnesses” that the author of Hebrews speaks of in Hebrews 12:1-2. And they are right here among us! Let us be in prayer for each other, caring for each other, loving each other, as we each strive to run our race faithfully.
Hebrews 12:1-2, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
