I have been to my share of weddings, and a common observation is the smiling faces of the bride and groom.  There is a joy in this celebration.

A second observations comes 3 to 6 months after the wedding.  The sanctifying adjustment of not just focusing on yourself, but this one-flesh union with your spouse.  The Lord reveals selfishness that the new husband and wife weren’t even aware of when they were single.  I am thankful this selfishness is completely taken care of in that first year of marriage.

Of course we know this is not the case.  I know the Lord continues to reveal areas where I am selfish toward Cinda.  Thankfully, for Cinda and for me, the Lord has grown me from where I was during that first year of marriage…..but there is still work to be done, work I am glad to undertake, because I want to have the attitude of Christ more and more.

I encourage you to read Philippians 2:1-8.

Think deeply on what this text means; what the implications are for you; thank the Lord for areas where you have grown in living like this; ask Him to reveal areas where you still need to grow and to give you this victory; ask the Lord to change your desires to always think of others more highly than yourself.

There is some low hanging fruit in all of our lives where we can take some immediate steps.  Perhaps you may recognize some in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AsoLHN1EWg
